Autophagy

Autophagy is a process of bulk protein degradation through an autophagosomic-lysosomal pathway. It is important for differentiation, survival during nutrient deprivation and normal growth control, and is often defective in tumor cells. Autophagy also protects cells from various apoptotic stimuli. Although it is not clear how autophagy prevents cells from undergoing apoptosis, one suggested mechanism is the sequestration of damaged mitochondria.
